We are in Glasgow for the long weekend (Columbus Day holiday). We drove up yesterday. Took us about 4 hours. We're staying at the Kirklee Hotel, a charming B&B in the "fashionable" West End. We spent Friday afternoon just wandering through the city center and admiring much of the architecture. Today we went to Glasgow Cathedral, the People's Palace and the Tenement House. All very interesting. Glasgow is a sprawling city, with the sights spread out. Most of the public transport is via buses. They're everywhere. Luckily our end of town is hooked up with the city center by the subway. It's called the Clockwork Orange because it runs a circular route and the signs and trains themselves are a bright orange color. The cars of the subway trains are so small. the first train I saw emerge from the impossibly short tunnel looked like a toy model. The platforms are very short as each train is only about 3 cars long, at most. The stations, though brightly lit and seemingly safe, were a bit on the stinky side (mostly smelling of mildew). I couldn't bear to look down on the tracks, where a scummy stream of water lay. Inside, the cars are lined with fabric covered benches, stained here and there. Brad only has a few inches of headroom in the tallest part of the car. It's a rough ride as well. One must cling on for dear life as the train hurtles through the tunnels. I don't mean to sound down on Glasgow because of the state of the subway system. If I hadn't been such a regular on the Tokyo subway system I probably wouldn't have thought twice about the Clockwork Orange.
We must make a decision for tomorrow.... make a side trip to Loch Lomond (a half hour away) or continue exploring Glasgow.
