The Money Tree

While hiking the footpaths and trails of North Yorkshire, I've encountered a number of oddities along the way, one of which is this log embedded with coins. I haven't done the research yet to find out why people pound their coins into dead trees. Is it just a superstition for good luck -- like throwing a coin in a fountain? Maybe someone else out there in cyberspace knows. Your comments are welcome.
